Dear Instagram (a letter) / by Emily Margaret

Dear Instagram,

I don't often get involved in matters like this, but as you're near and dear to my heart, I had to let you know my feelings. I often declare my love for you, as you're my favorite social media. I love the beautiful photographs, your design, and the sense of community. Because of you, I have found many fantastic businesses, joined communities, networked, and have made many new friends. You're a constant source of inspiration to me.

Unlike other social networks (facebook & twitter), up until now you have allowed us users to choose what we want to see in our newsfeeds. No confusing algorithms or paid posts to boosts views. For small business owners like me, this is a very important thing, and has been one of the main reasons why I love you so.

But now, dear Instagram, you are straining our relationship. On Tuesday, you announced that to improve my experience, my feed will soon be ordered to show the moments you believe I care about the most. And that's the thing- I don't want you to change. I love you the way you are. I don't want you to decide what I see.

You may say that this won't matter, that this will make things better between us, but I've been there before. Because I am loyal to you and really do like you, I'll be staying around to see how things go. I'm not breaking up with you and I'm hoping for the best, but I just wanted you to know how this makes me feel.
